About

The OSCE Programme Office in Astana will support the meeting of the Shu-Talas Water Basin Council, which will address the issues of climate change adaptation in the Shu-Talas river Basin, with a specific set of recommendations to be enacted in the area. Special attention will be given to the forms and methods of data exchange to support trans-boundary co-operation, with the aim of achieving better cooperation and mutually beneficial water management decisions.

The OSCE Programme Office in Astana will also support a back-to-back training workshop for Water Basin Council members from Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan, as well as other interested stakeholders from the private sector and non-governmental organizations. The workshop will focus on water basin management in the context of joint use and protection of trans-boundary water resources, as well as on climate change adaptation measures approved by the Water Basin Councils.

This project is part of the Office’s multiyear efforts to raise awareness and build capacity of the state institutions in the area of water governance. It goes in line with the decision of the Maastricht’s Ministerial Council on the OSCE Strategy Document for the Economic and Environmental Dimension that underlines the importance of water diplomacy from the regional context and public involvement in respective decision-making.
